"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. " Henry David Thoreau, Walden, Conclusion, 1854
US Transcendentalist author (1817 - 1862)
What can I not say about Drumm? He is my Heart Hound. Drumm came to me on Sept. 21, 2001, after driving up to Poughkeepsie, NY, to pick him up from his breeder, Trudi Jensen, Hounds of Cazimir. Though showing is not his "thing", Pet Therapy is something he highly enjoys doing. Drumm is the only one of the Pet Partners who has been allowed in the UAB's Heart Transplant unit to visit with patients. He has visited at UAB's Comprehensive Cancer Center, Childrens Hospital, St. Vincents Hospital, is one of the Reading Buddies at South Eastern Elementary School, and is one of the most requested pet therapists here in B'ham.
After my Grandmother passed away, Drumm started alerting me to my severe hypoglaucemia which has led to a seizure problem. With out Drumm, I don't know how I would have made it through such a hard time.
He is well known for his Russian tricks, his favorite of which is to show people where thier tummies are. Drumm does not show anymore in conformation or obedience shows, as anyone who has ever seen him at a show knows, he really does not like them. He pouts, he sulks, and he overall looks miserable! Once out of the ring, he looks for kids to go visit, and several times I have had to ask kids to please pet him to make him feel better. His last show was at Tupelo, MS, where he decided to bite my rear end and hold it while doing the down and back - as seen from the picture to the left, he got his first, and only, point by going WD/BOW. The judge loved him and was laughing at him, so he hammed it up even more by grabbing the lead and taking ME around the ring.
Drumm also does not course, as he doesn't care for the lure once it turns. I should have gotten him to LGRA events, but due to my work schedule and LGRA events being cancelled with in my driving area, I haven't been able to. His experience with Pet Therapy on the units that he has visited, being a Service Dog, and being an Animal Assisted Crisis-Response canine has long since made up, in my eyes and heart, for his lack of show points. Drumm's only conformation fault is that he has a crook at the end of his tail due to a door being shut on it as a puppy. It certainly has not stopped him from living a normal, happy life, and bringing joy to many people.
